What band consists of two brothers, a father and son, and an uncle and nephew yet is only a trio? The answer to this future question on a jazz trivia quiz is 3G, A trio consisting of brothers Ronan and Conor Guilfoyle, and Ronan’s son Chris Guilfoyle. Ronan and Conor have been pillars of the Irish jazz scene for more than 20 years, have been hugely influential with their work on rhythm both nationally and internationally, and have performed and taught all over the world. Chris is very much following in the family business, graduating with a BA in Jazz Performance from Newpark Music Centre, and an MA from Lucerne Hochschule in Switzerland, leads and composes for his own band ‘Umbra’, and has already performed with such international luminaries as George Kontrafouris, Ralph Peterson and Dave Liebman.

With such a background and given the history of the brothers Guilfoyle, you might expect 3G to be concerned a lot with rhythm and you wouldn’t be wrong! The trio espouses a virtuoso approach to both playing in general and rhythm in particular, and their music is muscular, forthright and swinging. With a repertoire comprising of original compositions and reinvestigations of classic jazz standards, 3G’s music both refers to the jazz tradition and revels in areas yet to be fully explored. The music is often rhythmically complex yet never loses sight of the traditional jazz virtues of swing and groove, interplay and interaction, exploration and surprise.
