Premiere performance of my new piano piece, performed by the brilliant Michael McHale, commemorating the civilians killed in the 1916 Rising, and of all civilians killed in war.

In the discussions about the 1916 Rising, what's often forgotten is that the vast majority of the people killed in that event were civilians. 184 civilians were killed, with over 200 wounded. Many of these casualties were children. As always in modern warfare, it was the local people, trapped between two warring armies, that suffered the most. The centre of their city destroyed, unable to get food for days, risking death by going outside their homes, and sometimes dying in their homes, the civilian victims of 1916 have a resonance with contemporary civilians in the Middle East, where hundreds of thousands are daily forced to flee their homes. This piece is about, and dedicated to all of these innocent victims of events beyond their control
